Whether you’re a history aficionado, a music lover, a food lover, or simply in search of a peaceful retreat, Skálholt has something for everyone. Located just an hour’s drive from Reykjavík, included in the Golden circle, it’s easily accessible and makes for a perfect day trip or a weekend getaway.
The Skálholt Cathedral is open everyday from 9:00-18:00 and everyone is welcome to visit the church. There you can see beautiful artworks, explore the archaeological wonders in the cellar, attend concerts and ceremonies and learn about the history of the place.
Guided tours can be booked for groups of 10+ and takes about 30 minutes. Book a guided tour by sending an email to: skalholt@skalholt.is.
If you don't want a guided tour but have questions about the place or would like to learn something about it there is always a church warden present in the church during the summertime which you are welcome to ask questions about Skálholt.
The restaurant Hvönn is open this summer from 11:30 to 21:00. The restaurant is an experimental kitchen where Icelandic ingredients are the main focus. In the kitchen, Icelandic and foreign food traditions collide. Meat, fish and vegetables from the region are used, but also foreign methods of fermentation such as kombucha, lactic acid, kefir and dry fermentation. These methods give our food and drink a unique taste and texture.
Come and experience the charm of one of Iceland’s most cherished heritage sites this summer. Skálholt awaits you!
